Q: Ever since I was a little kid, I've heard a lazy fly ball referred to as a "can of corn." Where did this odd little phrase originate?
A couple of possible sources of the phrase are cited in the definitive "New Dickson Baseball Dictionary." The most accepted: The phrase, first used in 1896, makes reference to a long-ago practice where a grocer would use a stick to tip a can of vegetables off a high shelf, then catch it in his hands or outstretched apron. Another possible source: Such a pop fly is as easy to capture as "corn from a can."

The excavation for the JV field started September 10th The backstop is down thanks to several Dads and Players. The excavation is now done thanks to the generous donation of Construction Materials Exchange and J&J trucking of Vancouver, Washington. The dirt was all taken for free by S&H logging. Knife River Aggregates has made a generous donation to the program by deeply discounting the concrete we needed for the flat work.
Meisel Rock Products has donated the drain rock we need for behind the dugouts and for the field drainage. The seed, donated by Ewing Irrigation, is now down and we are waiting for it to germinate.
Next we need to waterproof the dugouts and finish the backfill. Then the major job of re-installing the backstop.
Tony Fisher is the project manager for the expansion and has really helped beat the weather so we can be playable in the spring. Without his donation of time and talent, this project would not be possible
